Asus Chromebook Flip Laptop Review

About Asus Chromebook Flip

The Flip weighs a bit more than most Chromebooks and many Windows and Mac laptops, coming in at 3.3 pounds. At .65 inches thick, it’s barely thicker than the competition. Asus offers this machine with a choice of three Intel processors, 4 or 8 gigabytes (GB) of memory, and a 32, 64, or 128 GB solid-state drive that you can expand with a microSD storage card in its slot. One USB and two USB-C ports let you plug in peripherals, while Bluetooth and Wi-Fi offer wireless connections. Note that ASUS also sells the Chromebook Flip C434, which has a somewhat better screen and other improvements over the 433 that's the subject of this review.

Asus estimates the Flip will run up to 10 hours on a charge, after which you’ll need to tie up one of its USB-C ports with the Flip’s charger. Its 14-inch screen features 1920x1080 resolution, with a backlit keyboard and touchpad below the hinge and a high-definition (720p) webcam above it. This laptop doesn't include biometric authentication such as fingerprint readers, so you’ll have to unlock it by typing in a password each time.

Asus Chromebook Flip

The Asus Chromebook Flip C433 is a 2-in-1 convertible laptop. This means you can rotate the 14-inch touchscreen 360 degrees around until it’s flat against the bottom of the machine, at which point you can invert it and use the computer in tablet mode. It runs Google’s web-centric Chrome OS, which primarily uses apps inside Google’s Chrome browser (although you can also run Android apps inside their own windows). Like other Chromebooks, it offers less built-in storage than Windows and Mac laptops, the idea being that you’ll keep most of your data and files in Google’s cloud.

Asus Chromebook Flip Review

The Chromebook Flip tied for 13th place in the U.S. News Best Laptops of 2021 list with a score of 3.3 and ranked No. 3 in our list of the Best Chomebooks of 2021. Reviewers generally say it has decent battery life and a pleasing design that, thanks to its inclusion of one older USB-A port, won’t require customers to carry around an adapter for their older devices.

However, the Flip’s lack of a fingerprint reader or another form of biometric authentication is a downside of the design. Some reviewers also said that the Flip's magnets holding its screen closed are too strong.

Is the Asus Chromebook Flip Right for Me?

Best for those who:

✓ Primarily use web-based apps

✓ Already rely heavily on such Google web apps as Gmail and Google Docs

✓ Are in the market for a two-in-one laptop

Not recommended for those who:

- Are looking for the lightest possible laptop

- Prioritize battery life

- Require lots of storage

The limited storage, average battery life, and low price make the Asus Chromebook Flip a better fit for buyers who are looking to save money and who aren’t too invested in advanced features. The more time a potential Flip user spends using web browser-based apps instead of separate programs, the more likely they are to find that this computer works for them.

Best Asus Laptops

Asus sells a wide range of Windows and Chrome OS laptops, including thin-and-light models intended for traveling professionals and heavier, more powerful machines for gamers. Among its Chromebooks, the Flip is one of the least expensive available.

How Much Does the Asus Chromebook Flip Cost?

The Asus Chromebook Flip has a list price of $529, although that may be discounted at various retailers. There are no upgrades to configure or options to select.

How to Buy the Asus Chromebook Flip

Asus lists the Chromebook Flip in several configurations, including SSDs from 64-512 GB, RAM from 4-16 GB, and two different processor options (the Intel Core M3-8100Y or the Intel Core i5-10210U). Buying a Flip largely involves configuring it for your needs.

1. Evaluate your needs, especially storage. Consider your memory needs. If you primarily stick to web apps, the base 64 GB drive and 5 GB of RAM will probably suffice. However, if you install a lot of Android apps or store large media files, you may need additional drive space and RAM. You may also want to step up to the faster processor.

2. Consider inspecting the laptop in person. Best Buy sells a version of the Flip, so you can check it out in person even if that version isn't configured the way you want.

3. Buy the laptop.

Asus Chromebook Flip FAQ

What Is the Asus Chromebook Flip Warranty?

Asus offers a one-year warranty. When you purchase one at Best Buy, you will have a chance to pay for extra coverage through that retailer’s Geek Squad service. However, at $104.99 for a year, it’s a poor bargain for a laptop this cheap.

How do I contact Asus customer service?

Asus offers in-warranty technical support via a toll-free number from 9 a.m. to midnight Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. You can also request help on its site via email or live chat.

Can the Asus Chromebook Flip be upgraded?

Like most thin-and-light laptops and almost all Chromebooks, the Flip isn’t built for user serviceability. The spec sheet notes that the memory modules come soldered to the motherboard; it may be possible to replace the solid-state drive or the battery, but those procedures are likely to require personal experience in computer repair or paying for professional help.

Asus Chromebook Flip vs. the Competition

Which Is Better: the Asus Chromebook Flip or the Lenovo Chromebook Duet?

Both of these machines are two-in-one laptops that you can use as tablets, but the Flip’s permanently attached keyboard should make it much more comfortable for extended typing. This is especially true when using it on your lap, where the Duet’s kickstand support can easily slide off. The Flip does cost about twice as much as the Duet while providing the same 64 GB of storage.

Which Is Better: the Asus Chromebook Flip or the Google Pixelbook Go?

These two Chrome OS models have been around for a while, but as a 2-in-1 convertible, the Flip offers a level of utility the Go can’t match. With its extra USB port – one in the older USB-A format – the Flip also works with many more peripherals and gadgets without requiring the adapter you’d need with the USB-C-only Pixelbook. But if you need extra storage and don’t mind paying Google’s higher-than-average upgrade costs, you can order the Go with much larger solid-state drives, while you can’t do that on the Flip.

Which Is Better: the Asus Chromebook Flip or the HP Envy x360?

The Flip and the Envy x360 share the convenience of 2-in-1 convertible designs; both are ready to be turned into tablets or folded up into “tent mode,” with the screen facing towards you, for streaming video. Nevertheless, their operating systems are quite different. Chrome OS offers exceptionally easy setup, backup, and restore procedures, while Windows requires more work in all of these areas. However, Windows not only can run all of the web apps Chrome OS supports, but also the entire universe of Windows apps. That makes the Envy the more useful machine overall.
