Asus VivoBook S15 Laptop Review

About Asus VivoBook S15

Desktop-replacement laptops like this VivoBook ask you to accept a little extra weight and bulk in return for screen, keyboard, and expansion options closer to what a desktop would get you. The VivoBook S15 is 4 pounds and .7 inches thick. Asus doesn’t specify its battery life.

This VivoBook configuration, built around an Intel-compatible AMD Ryzen 7 processor and a 15.6-inch non-touch 1920x1080p display, offers a desktop’s worth of expansion ports: three USB Type-A ports, one port for USB Type-C devices, one HDMI port, and a microSD Card slot. There’s also Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 for wireless connections to networks and peripherals. Asus only lists a single configuration of memory (8 GB) and SSD storage (512 GB), but its screen lid comes in a choice of bright colors.

The VivoBook S15’s backlit keyboard features a separate numeric keypad and a touchpad. A fingerprint reader supports Windows Hello biometric authentication, but the 720p webcam above the display doesn't support facial recognition for use with Windows Hello.

Asus VivoBook S15

The Asus VivoBook S15 is a big-screen, low-cost Windows 10 laptop built along traditional lines, lacking 2-in-1 convertibility or even a touchscreen. Although it's heftier than competitors, it has room for a 15.6-inch display, a wide array of expansion ports, and a keyboard that includes a separate number pad. Asus also sells a wide variety of VivoBook S15 configurations with either Intel or AMD Ryzen processors, but this profile focuses on a model with an Intel-compatible AMD Ryzen 7 4700U processor. An AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processor is also available.

Asus VivoBook S15 Review

Reviews of the VivoBook S15 takes the No. 13 spot in our Best Laptops of 2021 list and No. 5 on our list of the Best Cheap Laptops. It combines a low price of $699.99 with desktop-grade features like a full set of expansion ports and a keyboard with a separate numeric keypad.

The VivoBook S15’s battery life did not win as much praise, with reviews of this laptop’s Intel versions finding results from 8 to 16 hours depending on the version. Note that the VivoBook S15 ships with a proprietary charger. And because it doesn't support charging through its USB Type-C port, you’ll be stuck carrying that power brick with you.

Is the Asus VivoBook S15 Right for Me?

Best for those who:

✓ Want a desktop-replacement laptop

✓ Have a limited budget

✓ Need to plug in multiple peripherals at once

Not recommended for those who:

- Like Windows 10’s touch interface

- Place a high value on portability

The odds of the VivoBook S15 suiting you probably correlate with the amount of time this computer spends sitting on a desk instead of being used in transit. It’s thin enough but notably heavier than competing models with smaller screens, and its need for a proprietary power adapter further limits portability. The lack of a touchscreen may rule out this laptop completely for people who like the touchscreen interface in Windows 10.

Other Products Offered By Asus

Asus sells a wide range of Windows and Chrome OS laptops, including the more expensive Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, thin-and-light models like the ZenBook 13, and the Chromebook Flip. Asus also offers heavier, more powerful machines for gamers. The VivoBook S15 is among the cheaper Windows laptops Asus offers.

How Much Does the Asus VivoBook S15 Cost?

The Asus VivoBook S15 carries a $699.99 list price, although it’s not hard to find that discounted. The configuration evaluated in this review doesn’t allow any customization; fortunately, the 512 GB SSD should be enough for many users. Otherwise, shoppers will want to look to other VivoBook S15 models offering 1 terabyte (TB) drives. Some models also come with Intel processors instead of AMD Ryzen processors.

How to Buy the Asus VivoBook S15

While Asus lists a variety of configurations in the broader VivoBook S15 line, this particular model doesn’t come with any alternative configurations. It’s available both on Asus’s own website and multiple third-party electronics retailers. To purchase a VivoBook S15:

1. Assess your needs. Will the 512 GB SSD be enough? It should be for most people, but those with large media libraries will want to look at other models in this family with 1 TB SSDs.

2. Compare pricing. See how the pricing at Asus compares with that of third-party retailers, who may also be able to get a laptop to you faster.

3. Buy the laptop.

Asus VivoBook S15 vs. the Competition

Which Is Better: the Asus VivoBook S15 or the HP Envy x360?

These two laptops start at the same price but go in very different directions. The VivoBook emphasizes screen size at the expense of portability, while the Envy x360 is built around a 2-in-1 convertible design that lets you fold the laptop up to use as a touchscreen tablet. The VivoBook 15 provides much more storage than the Envy with a 512 GB SSD compared to a 128 GB SSD on the base Envy.

Which Is Better: Asus VivoBook S15 or Google Pixelbook Go?

The VivoBook and the Pixelbook Go start at about the same price but probably won’t appeal to the same buyers. The Pixelbook Go’s Chrome OS and limited onboard storage – just 64 GB in its entry-level configuration – make it the better fit for people who spend most of their time on their current computer in a web browser. The VivoBook S15’s 512 GB of SSD capacity, meanwhile, should get the attention of users who prefer a traditional operating system, enjoying their own libraries of music, photos, and pictures, and rely on apps installed on the computer.
